he Rover Company (the creator of the Land Rover marque) had been experimenting with a larger model than the Land Rover Series as far back as 1951, when the Rover P4-based two-wheel-drive "Road Rover" project was developed by Gordon Bashford.[1] This was shelved in 1958, and the idea lay dormant until 1966, when engineers Spen King and Gordon Bashford set to work on a new model.[2]
In 1967, the first Range Rover prototype was built, with the classic Range Rover shape clearly discernible, but with a different front grille and headlight configuration. The design of the Range Rover was finalised in 1969. Twenty-six Velar engineering development vehicles were built between 1969 and 1970 and were road registered with the number plates YVB151H through to YVB177H.[3] The Velar name was derived from the Italian "velare" meaning to veil or to cover.[4] Range Rover development engineer Geof Miller used the name as a decoy for registering pre-production Range Rovers. The Velar company was registered in London and produced 40 pre-production vehicles that were built between 1967 and 1970. Most of these Velar pre-production vehicles are accounted for and have survived into preservation.[4]
The Range Rover was launched in 1970. In the early 1970s, the Musée du Louvre in Paris exhibited a Range Rover as an "exemplary work of industrial design".[5]
In 1972, the British Trans-Americas Expedition became the first vehicle-based expedition to traverse the two American continents from north-to-south, including traversing the roadless Darién Gap. The specially modified Range Rovers used for this expedition are now on display in the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire.
Before 1987, Land Rover vehicles were only sold in the United States through the grey market. The Land Rover company began selling the Range Rover officially in the U.S. on March 16, 1987. From that time until 1993, the U.S. marketing was all in the name of Range Rover, because it was the only model offered in the American market. In 1993, with the arrival of the Defender 110 and the imminent arrival of the Land Rover Discovery, the company's U.S. sales were under the name "Land Rover North America".
In 2005, Land Rover launched another model under the Range Rover brand – the Range Rover Sport, which was based on the Land Rover Discovery platform.
In 2011, the Range Rover Evoque was launched.
The first-generation Range Rover was produced between 1970 and 1996.
The original car was not designed as a luxury-type 4x4, much like other utility vehicles such as the Jeep Wagoneer of the United States were. While certainly up-market compared to preceding Land Rover models, the early Range Rovers had fairly basic, utilitarian interiors with vinyl seats and plastic dashboards that were designed to be washed down with a hose. Convenience features such as power assisted steering, carpeted floors, air conditioning, cloth/leather seats, and wooden interior trim were fitted later.
The Range Rover was a body-on-frame design with a box section ladder type chassis, like the contemporary Series Land Rovers. The Range Rover utilised coil springs as opposed to leaf springs, permanent four-wheel drive, and four-wheel disc brakes. However, from the third generation a monocoque body structure has been used. The Range Rover was originally powered by the Rover V8 engine. Later models were powered by a 4.4 L BMW V8, until the introduction of a 3.6 litre TDV8 engine.
Originally, the Range Rover was fitted with a detuned 135 hp (101 kW) version of the Buick-derived Rover V8 engine. In 1984, the engine was fitted with Lucas fuel injection, boosting power to 155 hp (116 kW). The 3.5 litre (3,528 cc) engine was bored out to a displacement of 3.9 litres (3,947 cc) for the 1990 model year, and 4.2 litre (4,215 cc) in 1992 (1993 model year) for the 108-inch Long Wheelbase Vogue LSE (County LWB [long wheelbase] in North America). One of the first significant changes came in 1981, with the introduction of a four-door body. Shortly after they introduced twin thermo fan technology to reduce significant overheating problems 1970s models experienced in Australia. In 1988, LR introduced a durable 2.4 litre turbodiesel (badged Vogue Turbo D) arrived with 112 bhp (84 kW), manufactured by Italian VM Motori. The same engine was also available in the Rover SD1 passenger car. The diesel project was codenamed project Beaver. During the project, 12 world records were broken, including the fastest diesel SUV to reach 100 mph (160 km/h), and the furthest a diesel SUV has travelled in 24 hours. In 1990 project Otter was unvieled. This was a mildly tuned 2.5 litre, 119 bhp (89 kW) version of the 'Beaver' 2.4. In 1992, Land Rover finally introduced their own diesel engines in the Range Rover, beginning with the 111 bhp (83 kW) 200TDi, first released in the Land Rover Discovery and following in 1994, the 300 TDi, again with 111 bhp.

Land Rover Defender Harris Tweed Edition by Kahn Design

Kahn Design has prepared another custom version of the Defender, this time featuring Harris Tweed fabric inserts. It is the only fabric in the world governed by its own Act of Parliament and it has found its way in this Defender. The “champagne of fabrics” has been hand-woven by using pure virgin wool, while the bespoke interior also has a piano black wood center dash surround, red rev counter, machined aluminum pedals, red seat belts, along with front and rear racing seats in black quilted leather with Harris Tweed inserts. Adorning the cabin is the Nappa leather and grey Alcantara with silver and red contrasting stitching. On the outside it gets a wide body kit with extended wheel arches, vented headlight surrounds, stainless steel front grille, LED headlights, clear front and rear light lenses and 18-inch 1983 Defender alloy wheels.

Press release:

Afzal Kahn insists the road is his catwalk and true to his mantra, the iconic British designer has combined what can only be described as the “the Champagne of fabrics” we are talking about the only fabric in the world governed by its own *Act of Parliament: Harris Tweed – with a descendent of the all-terrain vehicle developed in 1947 on the 250-acre Anglesey farm of joint Rover MD Maurice Wilks: the iconic Defender.
This is a fashion statement in every single sense of the word and the nearly-seventy-year-old original Defender, treated to a makeover by the principal British Designer under the guise of the Kahn expedition Vehicles Umbrella and aptly titled: The Defender Concept 17 Wide Body – Harris Tweed Prototype is proof Afzal Kahn is a keen supporter of investing in British Industry.
On paper, it should not work. However, Defender owners need not exercise caution, for Harris Tweed is a ‘noble’ fabric that is favoured by Afzal Kahn and is applied to many of his products.
To match the Iconic feel of the underlying car, the Kahn Defender is adorned with a brand new utilitarian and aggressive looking wide track arch kit which consists of lightweight extended wide wing wheel arches with integrated vents, stainless steel front grille with embossed Kahn feature, vented headlight surrounds, side vents with mesh, bonnet vents with mesh, clear rear light lenses, clear side repeaters, clear front light lenses, LED B6 headlights, Kahn prototype wing blades, Kahn prototype tailgate badge and Kahn oval tailgate badge.
The compulsory branded rear wheel cover ensures the driving position is luxurious and remains more responsive in complicated conditions and although it won't ever change its spots, Afzal Kahn has ensured the Kahn Defender concept 17 wide body exudes a certain charm which goes hand in hand with both fashion and all things automotive.
Hand woven by the islanders on the Isles of Harris, Lewis, Uist and Barra in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, using local wool, Harris Tweed is one of the most traditional and rustic of fabrics and the fabric of choice for the most discerning of clients – and the interior of this vehicle transcends all things automotive because this is all about making a fashion statement!
The bespoke touch includes a red Kahn rev counter, red Kahn Churchill time clock, black piano wood centre dash surround, red seat belts, aluminum machined pedals, front and rear racing seats in black quilted nappa leather with Harris Tweed Inserts and silver contrast stitching, centre glove box in black quilted nappa leather and grey alcantara with red and silver contrast stitching, instrument binnacle in grey alcantara with red and silver contrast stitching, dashboard in black nappa leather and grey alcantara with red and silver contrast stitching, roof lining in grey alcantara with Harris Tweed inserts and red contrast stitching, sun visors in grey alcantara with Harris Tweed inserts and red contrast stitching and door trims in black quilted nappa leather and grey alcantara with silver contrast stitching.
However, we provide our customers with the opportunity to express one's individuality and they can have whatever they want. Afzal Kahn will add your personally requested luxury style and taste to the equation making you feel even more at home than you already are. He could, for example, design for you a vehicle with an interior the same shade of your living room, the choice is yours.
Kahn wheels sit perfectly on any vehicle, conveying the essence of the vehicle's identity. Created using state-of-the art manufacturing and materials technology, the 18” 1983 Defender wheels are finished in the colour of your choice and fit all original centre caps. With simple clean lines, soft organic surfaces on the edge of the spoke and a purposeful mechanical centre, the 1983 Defender wheels are synonymous with elegance and innovation.
A. Kahn Design is for the individual who will not submit to a life of uniformity and who will only accept perfection. Dedicated to the creation of luxury bespoke vehicles, we redesign the ordered monotony of mass produced vehicles and rebuild them into individually tailored creations.

2012 Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque is a big step forward for Land Rover. Not only because it is the smallest and most fuel efficient model in the British firm's range, but also because its styling will influence the design of the new 2012 Range Rover (spied here testing with heavy camouflage), according to the company’s head of design Gerry McGovern.
“There are aspects of the design that will be key. Range Rovers usually have a level window line and the body’s side and glass areas are equal. We’ve got rid of both on the Evoque, but we’ve still got the signature floating roof” said McGovern in an interview with Autocar magazine.
In addition, both the windscreen and the rear window will have a steeper angle, contributing to the sportier feel of the new Range Rover, while the interior will bear some resemblance to the Evoque. Land Rover says it will try to improve interior space, especially for rear passengers.
Reducing fuel consumption is also priority, not only with the use of more modern engines but also by constructing the Range Rover from alloy panels which is said to help shave about 450kg (992 pounds) reducing the weight to around 2,200kg (4,850 pounds).

Land Rover Rumored to Reveal New Defender Concept

Designing a new car from scratch is a relatively easy task for an automaker –provided it has the resources. Replacing an icon, however, is much more difficult.
Especially if said icon has a long and distinguished history and has made its manufacturer synonymous to hardcore 4x4 capabilities. The Defender is one such example.
However, that’s what Land Rover intends to do, and the first step will reportedly be the unveiling of a new Defender concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Land Rover director John Edwards told Autocar magazine that he “can’t imagine not producing a successor” to the four-wheel drive that established the brand. However the market is now much more competitive and Land Rover's owner Tata Motors must find a way to make the new Defender a credible rival that can command higher prices without losing its legendary character.
Edwards admits that for the project, which is scheduled to begin production in 2015, to be viable, annual sales must be in the 60-80,000 units region.
In comparison, only 18,000 Defenders were sold worldwide last year. Edwards says that, like the 4x4 it intends to replace, it must be versatile and reliable enough to adapt to army use.
Currently Land Rover is considering all options for the new Defender’s underpinnings, from using a modified Discovery chassis to designing something completely new.
Whatever the British company decides, one thing is for sure: they need to satisfy the loyalists and at the same time attract a much larger clientele.

Evoque “Victoria Beckham Special Edition” Delayed by Daughter’s Birth

Apparently, Land Rover views the Range Rover Evoque not only as its smallest, more frugal and most affordable model that will bring new customers to the brand, but also as a lifestyle statement.
That’s why, according to company insiders, Land Rover is ready for the launch of a “Victoria Beckham Special Edition” named after the former pop star and the company’s new creative design director.
Said insiders told British magazine Autocar that the design of the special edition Evoque has been finalized. However the launch is being delayed until the former Spice Girl is ready to work again after giving birth to her and Los Angeles Galaxy football player’s David Beckham, daughter.
Land Rover has not yet revealed any information regarding the launch date or the specifications of the car. Given Victoria’s style, we expect a “posh” interior and, probably, a matching price tag for the privilege of owning one.

UK Insurer Parts the Most Unreliable and Costly Car

In an article on a BMW-faced Honda Accord we found for sale on Craigslist back in 2008, we wrote that in a perfect world, our ultimate car would be “designed by Italians, engineered by Germans, built by Japanese and marketed by Americans”.So, what’s the worst car one could imagine? Well, if we played around with the above statements, we’d say one designed by Japanese, engineered by Americans, built by Italians and marketed by Germans.
But UK insurance firm Warranty Direct had something a little bit different in mind. Instead of playing the origin card, the company decided to check out its database of 50,000 live policies on cars aged five years on average to part the UK’s most unreliable vehicle that would break down every other month and cost an average of £2,050 (equal to US$3,270 - €2,330) to fix each year.
By studying its Reliability Index tool that measures car reliability by considering average cost of repair, frequency of failure, age and mileage, the UK firm came up with an owner’s nightmare, which it calls the Monster Mk1.
The most unreliable car would be powered by an MG TF engine, ride on the suspension of a BMW M3, and have the electric workings of the Renault Megane, the air-conditioning system of a Seat Alhambra, the heating system of a Seat Toledo, the ignition of a Mercedes V-Class, the steering system of a Volvo C70, the gearbox of a Land Rover Freelander and the brakes of an Audi A8.
Commenting on the results, Warranty Direct managing director, Duncan McClure Fisher, said: “The Monster Mk1 represents the worst-performing vehicles in every sector, from suspension to electrics, on our roads today. The wide range of cars included in our special blend highlights how mostly reliable cars can be dragged down by one problem part.”
According to the British company, nearly 40 percent of BMW M3s require repairs to axle and suspension components alone each year, while the same percentage of Renault Meganes report an electrical fault on an basis.
Furthermore, one in five Land Rover Freelanders suffer transmission glitches each year and the same number of Audi A8s will need repairs to their brakes.
The company also found that almost a fourth of MG’s TF sports car owners will experience engine troubles, while more than one in eight SEAT Alhambra MPVs will need their air-con fixed during a typical year.

The Land Rover Discovery 4, also known as the LR4 in North America, is entering the 2012 model year with some minor refinements, the most important of which is the introduction of a new ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic transmission on the 3.0-liter SDV6 diesel engine which also benefits from a power boost.
First fitted to the Range Rover TDV8 for 2011, the 8-speed auto helps improve fuel consumption to 8.8lt/100km (26.7mpg US or 32.1mpg UK) in the combined cycle and bring down CO2 emissions from 244g/km to 230g/km.
Along with the new auto box, the updated Discovery 4 also comes equipped with the 'Drive Select' rotary gear shift and steering wheel-mounted paddle shift as standard.
The refined for the 2012MY 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel now delivers 256-horses, up from 245HP, while peak torque stands at 600Nm (443 lb-ft).
In addition to the powertrain improvements, the 2012MY Discovery 4 gains two new alloy wheel designs, three new optional packages including the Vission Assist Pack with Xenon Adaptive Front Headlamps including Cornering Lamps, Automatic Headlamps with High Beam Assist and the Surround Camera System with Approach Lamps, Tow Assist / Hitch Assist, plus improved audio and navigation systems throughout the range.
"Improved performance, lower CO2 emissions and enhanced design and equipment levels, consolidate the Discovery 4's position as the most capable and versatile all-purpose vehicle on and off the road today. The Discovery 4 is quite simply in a class of its own," said Colin Green, Land Rover UK Managing Director.
