he Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto were all involved with automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century. Alfieri, Bindo and Ernesto built 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto. In 1926, Diatto suspended the production of race cars, leading to the creation of the first Maserati and the founding of the Maserati marque. One of the first Maseratis, driven by Alfieri, won the 1926 Targa Florio. Maserati began making race cars with 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinders (two straight-eights mounted parallel to one another). Another Maserati brother, Mario, an artist, is believed to have devised the company's trident emblem, based on the Fontana del Nettuno, Bologna.

Alfieri Maserati died in 1932, but three other brothers, Bindo, Ernesto and Ettore, kept the firm going, building cars that won races.

In 1937, the remaining Maserati brothers sold their shares in the company to the Adolfo Orsi family, who in 1940 relocated the company headquarters to their hometown of Modena,[2] where it remains to this day. The brothers continued in engineering roles with the company. Racing successes continued, even against the giants of German racing, Auto Union and Mercedes. In back-to-back wins in 1939 and 1940, a Maserati 8CTF won the Indianapolis 500, the only Italian manufacturer ever to do so.

The war then intervened, Maserati abandoning cars to produce components for the Italian war effort. During this time, Maserati worked in fierce competition to construct a V16 towncar for Benito Mussolini before Ferry Porsche of Volkswagen built one for Adolf Hitler. This failed, and the plans were scrapped. Once peace was restored, Maserati returned to making cars; the Maserati A6 series did well in the post-war racing scene.

Key people joined the Maserati team. Alberto Massimino, an old Fiat engineer, with both Alfa Romeo and Ferrari experiences oversaw the design of all racing models for the next ten years. With him joined engineers Giulio Alfieri, Vittorio Bellentani, and Gioacchino Colombo. The focus was on the best engines and chassis to succeed in car racing. These new projects saw the last contributions of the Maserati brothers, who after their 10-year contract with Orsi expired went on to form O.S.C.A.. This new team at Maserati worked on several projects: the 4CLT, the A6 series, the 8CLT, and, pivotally for the future success of the company, the A6GCS.

The famous Argentinian driver Juan-Manuel Fangio raced for Maserati for a number of years in the 1950s, producing a number of stunning victories including winning the world championship in 1957 in the Maserati 250F alongside Toulo de Graffenried, Louis Chiron, Prince Bira, Enrico Platé, and a few others. Other racing projects in the 1950s were the 200S, 300S (with several famous pilots, among them Benoit Musy), 350S, and 450S, followed in 1961 by the famous Tipo 61.

Maserati had retired from factory racing participation because of the Guidizzolo tragedy[3] during the 1957 Mille Miglia, though they continued to build cars for privateers. After 1957, Maserati became more and more focused on road cars, and chief engineer Giulio Alfieri built the 6-cylinder 3500 2+2 coupé, which featured an aluminum body over Carrozzeria Touring's superleggera structure, a design also used for the small-volume V8-powered 5000. Next came the Vignale-bodied Sebring, launched in 1962, the Mistral Coupé in 1963 and Spider in 1964, both designed by Pietro Frua, and also in 1963, the company's first four-door, the Quattroporte, designed by Frua as well. The two-seat Ghibli coupé was launched in 1967, followed by a convertible in 1969.

Maserati GranTurismo Convertible Sovrano by DMC

Last year DMC launched an upgrade program for the Maserati GranTurismo and now they have developed a similar package for the convertible. Design-wise, we notice the new look of the front bumper and a new spoiler lip that increases downforce. The hood has extra air inlets and outlets, while the wide side skirts feature zig-zag end-panels. At the back, the diffuser and trunk spoiler have been reworked. All of the added parts are made from carbon fiber. The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible by DMC has also been fitted with a sport suspension that lowers it by about 30mm and it rides on 255/30 R20 tires (front) and 305/30 R21 (back). Under that orange hood of the GranTurismo Sovrano is the same V8 4.7-liter engine that has received a supercharger and is now capable of pumping out an additional 150 hp (112 kW) and 60 lb-ft (82 Nm), for a grand total of 590 hp (440 kW) at 7,300 rpm and a peak torque of 348 lb-ft (472 Nm) at 5,400 rpm.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale tuned by Novitec Tridente

Novitec Tridente has introduced a new tuning package for the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale.

On the styling front, the car has a ventilated hood, a reduced ride height, a sport exhaust system and 21- / 22-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires.

For added performance, the 4.7-liter V8 is equipped with a supercharger, a new intake manifold, larger fuel injectors and revised engine mapping. Thanks to these changes, the mill develops 646 PS (475 kW / 637 hp) and 624 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the car to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 11.4 seconds and top out at 306 km/h (190 mph).

The package is priced from €23,900 ($31,820), but customers can also order a bespoke interior which is "crafted to [the] utmost perfection."

Maserati Gran Turismo S Superior Black Edition by Anderson Germany

German tuner Anderson Germany has coated the Maserati Gran Turismo S in a silky matte-black with a few shining highlights and tinted head- and taillamps for this Superior Black Edition of the model.

The car gets a carbon body kit which includes a new bonnet, side mirrors, tailgate and roof ledges, front and rear aprons as well as the side air inlets.

More dark arts are practiced under the hood where the tuner dials up output on the 4.7 liter V8 to 492 PS (362 kW / 485 bhp) from the series 440 PS (324 kW / 434 bhp). A new stainless-steel exhaust system offers to sing for you in two separate keys.

Glossy black 21-inch rims also play as highlights, wrapped in 265 tires at the front and 295 at the back. A suspension lowering is performed too.

For the inside, we stay, of course, with the carbon theme in a black-carbon leather and black Alcantara combo complimented by red seams and stitching.

2011 DMC Sovrano based on the Maserati GT

German tuner DMC has unveiled the Sovrano 2011 based on the Maserati Gran Turismo.

Tuning under the hood consist of an ECU remap along with a new supercharger that boost output on the 4.7 liter V8 to 590 PS (434 kW / 582 bhp) and 472 Nm (348 lb-ft) of torque. That's an improvement of 150 PS (110 kW / 148 bhp) and 82 Nm (60 lb-ft) over the series' numbers.

For the carbon-fiber aerodynamic kit, DMC adds a new front bumper with spoiler lip, a new lightweight bonnet with air inlets and outlets, wide-body side skirts, a boot-lid spoiler and a new rear diffuser.

DMC improves the ride with a suspension lowering by 30 mm and adds a 255/30/R20 (20-inch rims) wheel/tire combo for the front and a 305/30/R21 (21-inch rims) coupling at the back.

For the interior finish, DMC offers a leather upholstery with ornamental seams done in checkered stitching. There's also the aluminum pedals and the ergonomically-designed sport steering wheel.

Maserati UK Introduces New Sport Pack

A new sport package has been added to the available options for buyers of Maserati's GranTurismo S Automatic in Britain.

This Sport pack is said to enhance the GranTurismo S Automatic's performance by adding the MC Auto Shift software that allows for faster gear changes and a revised exhaust system, which keeps its bypass valves fully open in Sport mode to provide what the company describes as "an even richer sound".
The package also adds a variety of styling features including include body colored side skirts and front winglets, a black grille featuring the Maserati Trident logo with red accents, black mesh side grilles, smoked out headlights, an integrated rear boot lid spoiler and oval exhaust pipes.
The coupe's sportier looks are rounded off with Grigio Mercury Neptune-design alloy wheels.
Maserati says the 4.7-litre V8 continues to develop 440HP at 7000 rpm and a peak torque of 490Nm (361.4 lb-ft) at 4750 rpm offering the automatic coupe a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 5 seconds flat and a top speed of 183 mph (295 km/h).
The package is priced at £3,840, lifting the total price of the GranTurismo S Automatic to £92,480 on the road.

Maserati GranCabrio by Novitec

Ferrari-specialist tuner Novitec has a new upgrade program for the Maserati GranCabrio. With the kit, the car manages a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 301 km/h (187 mph).

A power boost comes courtesy of a new supercharger and watercooled intercooler (along with some ECU tinkering, of course) which provides for an output of 590 PS (434 kW / 582 bhp) and 572 Nm (422 lb-ft) of torque on the 4.7 liter V8 (series is 440 PS (324 kW / 434 bhp).

Novitec also adds a stainless-steel sport exhaust (with a sound-selecting tuner for the driver) and a KW aluminum coilover kit for the new sport suspension.

For the body kit are carbon-fiber front spoiler, side skirts, rear apron and boot lid spoiler. The whole thing rides on 21-inch wheels at the front and 22-inchers for the rear axle.

Price for the upgrade package is around €20,000 ($29,000) including new intake manifold and larger injectors.

Maserati Quattroporte Black Bison by Wald International

Wald International has unveiled their new Black Bison styling package for the Maserati Quattroporte.

Up front, the tuner installs a new bumper, a carbon fiber splitter, and LED daytime running lights. Out back, there's a revised rear bumper, a roof-mounted spoiler, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and a chrome-plated sport exhaust system. Elsewhere, the car is outfitted with aerodynamic side skirts and massive wheels.

The Black Bison package, minus the wheels, is priced from ¥870,000 (€7,735 / $10,650) but the components are also available individually.
