Audi is a name synonymous with quality and superior manufacturing - but where did this car come from and how, in its 101 year history, has it become the lauded option for automotive option that it is today?

Audi has origins of existing since 1909 after August Horch was forced out of car manufacturers Horch and set up a competing company in Zwickau. This company was originally called Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH but after a trademark infringement dispute with his previous company (Horch), the company was renamed Audi Automobilwerke GmbH in 1910. Interestingly, Audi is the Latin translation of the word, 'Horch', which would translate to 'hear' in English.

The first Audi car ever manufactured was a 2,612 cc, four cylinder model, which proved to be popular in sporting events. In 1921, Audi became the first German car manufacturer of a production car, the Audi Type K - which was a huge success for the company. Audi also released a six cylinder vehicle in 1924.

Following Horch's departure from Audi in 1920, Jorgen Rasmussen acquired the majority of Audi shares in 1928. In 1932, Audi agreed to merge with Horch, Wanderer and DJW to form Auto Union. Within this, they also created the first European car that combined a six cylinder engine with front-wheel drive. Auto Union vehicles also featured the trademark four rings that are present on Audi cars today.

Unfortunately, due to Germany's involvement in World War II, the Auto Union plants were drastically altered to cater for military production and were consequently heavily bombed. These factories were later dismantled and Germany's Auto Union AG was liquidated. The former Audi factory in Zwickau restarted construction of pre-war models in 1949.

A new Auto Union was launched in Bavaria in 1949 and continued to develop two-stroke engine vehicles. There was, however, no dedicated plant for effective mass production of vehicles. It was only in 1959 that the company were able to construct a plant at the Ingolstadt site.

In 1969, Auto Union merged with NSU, a fellow German manufacturer, who had specialised in motorcycles but aimed for smaller cars. The new company was known as Audi NSU Auto Union AG, seeing Audi as a separate brand since pre-war period. Volkswagen later introduced the USA to the Audio models in 1970.

The first new car was the Audi 100 in 1968, later followed by the Audi 50 in 1972, which would lead to a hugely successful world car. Audi introduced a performance car in 1980, known as the Audi Quattro, which was a great success in rallying. Audi quickly became known as a brand that knew how to develop advances in automotive technology.

In 1985, the official name was shortened to Audi AG, as Auto Union and NSU were effectively dead, becoming the company we now know today.

Audi sales grew rapidly in the 2000s, with particular interest from Eastern Europe and this trend is expected to continue further, with particular success derived from the Audi A4 models. Volkswagen AG currently holds over 99% of the Audi AG share capital.

SchwabenFolia has covered a modified Audi RS3 Sportback in a matte Gorange (gold-orange) Metallic foil. The car originally had a Suzuka Grey Metallic finish but now it wears a 2,350 EUR golden/orange skin, complemented by the 1,450 EUR customized interior featuring bucket seats with the Nordschleife logo and driver's name. Excluded from foliation were the side mirrors, glossy black roof, front lip, moldings, as well as the Audi rings in the grille, while at the back the taillights are now tinted.

Under the bonnet of this custom RS3 Sportback is the same 5-cylinder, 2.5-liter turbocharged engine but instead of producing 340 HP (250 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) it now churns 425 HP (313 kW) and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft). This was possible thanks to software optimization and by installing a RAGE 2.5 exhaust system developed by F-Town Street with dual 80mm tailpipes priced at 5,450 EUR.

2013 ABT Audi RS5-R

ABT Sportsline has developed an upgrade kit for the Audi RS5 which will be presented next week in Geneva. Power comes from the same normally-aspirated V8 4.2-liter engine but instead of 450 HP (331 kW) it now delivers 470 HP (345 kW) thanks to the new exhaust system featuring lateral dual pipes. The standard RS5 needs 4.6 seconds to complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h), while ABT's version will do it 0.3 seconds quicker.

Sitting on 20-inch alloy wheels, this custom Audi RS5 has a new front apron, front splitter, side skirts and rear wing – all of which are manufactured from carbon fiber. The same material was used for the diffuser and hood.

The interior cabin is decorated in black and red Alcantara with carbon fiber door panels, racing stripes on the bucket seats, along with a stainless steel roll cage and four-point seat belts.

Audi S6 by MTM

German tuner MTM has launched an upgrade program for the 2012 Audi S6 which brings a power increase and other improvements.

MTM is no stranger when it comes to aftermarket kits for Audi models as in the last few years they've come up with upgrade packages for the previous RS6, A1 and S5, just to name a few. Their latest project is based on the most recent S6 fitted with the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 TFSI engine which as standard produces 420 HP (309 kW) and 550 Nm (405 lb-ft).

By ECU remapping and making several engine modifications, the power unit is now capable of developing 555 HP (408 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time in 4.2 seconds (0.6s faster) and a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h), unlike the stock car which is electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Other parts available include MTM Bimoto nine-spoke alloys, custom suspension and a new brake kit with Brembo components. The power boost costs 3,791 EUR, while the suspension kit will set you back an additional 1,737 EUR.

Audi R8 V10 Spyder by B&B

B&B Automobiltechnik has launched a new upgrade program for the Audi R8 V10 Spyder. While last time they focused on the coupe, the latest aftermarket package takes care of the Spyder version. They installed a carbon air filter, custom racing exhaust system and remapped the electronic injection code fields to increase output to 628 HP (462 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) compared to the standard 525 HP (386 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb·ft) of torque.

B&B is also offering a sport suspension kit lowering the R8 by 20mm/25mm (front/rear) while for more money clients can opt for an adjustable version. They can also tweak the R-Tronic gear shift which will lower shift times significantly, making the gearbox even faster than that found in the R8 GT. Thanks to all modifications, the R8 V10 Spyder by B&B can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.5 seconds, making it 0.5 seconds quicker than stock version. The top speed has been increased from 316 km/h (196 mph) to 328 km/h (204 mph). Completing this tuning package are ceramic brakes and new sets of 19- and 20-inch alloys.

Prior Design Audi R8 GT650

Prior Design has released new details about their GT650 package for the Audi R8. Recently unveiled at the Essen Motor Show, the styling kit includes a new front bumper with a lip spoiler. There's also ventilated front fenders, revised side skirts and a roof scoop. Last but not least, the rear end features a new bumper, an aggressive diffuser and a massive wing.

The styling kit is constructed out of Dura-Flex Fiber Reinforced Plastic and comes complete with mounting hardware. Pricing starts at €19,900 ($26,030 / £16,155) but consumers can have the kit painted and installed by the company for additional cost.
